Walker Valley started out its season with a bang Tuesday evening, as the Lady Mustangs shut out Boyd Buchanan for a 6-0 victory.

“We came out and played very well,” head coach Nathan Brown commented. “I said in practice the day before that if we executed the five things I coached them on that we had a great chance of winning. They did all five and executed everything we’ve worked on in practice.”

In the 2012 season, the Lady Mustangs were shut out by the Lady Buccaneers, 4-0.

Following a pass from freshman Isabel Swafford, sophomore Jacey Edwards notched the first goal for the Lady Mustangs.

Junior Kayla West got the second goal of the match, with the assist coming from senior Kenzie Morris.

The next two goals for Walker Valley came from a couple of “wonder strikes from the edge of the 18,” Brown said of freshman Mya Patel’s shots.

The final two goals came from freshman Jade Mayo in the second half, with the assists from senior Cassie Craft.

“I’m extremely proud of the girls for their first win of the season and how they played. Our goalkeeper, Abby Sanders, had a great game in goal, keeping us with a clean sheet,” Brown said.

The Lady Mustangs will host Sweetwater on Thursday at 6 p.m.

“We have a lot to work on before that game, but we will be ready for a tough match,” Brown stated.

Lady Raiders fall

Just two hours north, the Cleveland Lady Raiders got their season started off on the road, as they traveled to Cookeville for some cross-region soccer action.

Ultimately it was the Lady Cavaliers who walked away with the victory, topping Cleveland 4-3.

It took Cookeville 12 minutes to get a goal past Lady Raider junior goalkeeper Jenna Scoggins.

Early into the second half the Lady Cavaliers extended their lead by another goal. Within five minutes the Lady Raiders were able to tie up the game, as senior McKenzie Harris got the first Cleveland goal, which was closely followed by a goal from junior Sam DeBien, with the assist coming from junior Tanya Anchondo.

Cookeville took back the lead with just under 13 minutes left in the match. Its winning goal came in the last few minutes of play.

Senior Hope Haas decreased the deficit by one right before the clock ran out, with an assist from DeBien.

The Lady Cavaliers had 10 shots on goal Tuesday evening, while the Lady Raiders had seven.

Cleveland’s next match will be Thursday at 5:30 against Silverdale at the Greater Cleveland Soccer Complex.
