Cleveland Coach Connie Stobert has been wanting to see her team be more aggressive at bat.
Tuesday evening she saw a glimpse of that as the Lady Raiders took on Ooltewah, but not enough to come away with a win.
By the time seven innings had come and gone, the hard-hitting Lady Owls team had a 15-3 victory over the Lady Raiders.
“I’ve been encouraging them to be more aggressive at bat and to have a sense of urgency to make something happen,” Stobert commented. “I think they were doing that, unfortunately we couldn’t find the hole like Ooltewah did. They were getting legit hits in the holes and those are hard to stop when they are unreachable.”
After two innings, Ooltewah had a 5-0 lead over Cleveland, who according to Coach Stobert, had fallen victim to their own errors.
“We started off on a bad foot and we made some errors that got us. There were some base-running errors that cost us also,” Stobert said.
The Lady Raiders held the Lady Owls to just one run in the top of the third, but were unable to make any of their hits count until the bottom of the sixth, when they were trailing 10-0.
Shay Sparks was able to knock one into right field and make it to first. Brittany Arnold’s follow-up sacrifice bunt advanced Sparks to second.
Amber Belcher’s hit was caught, giving Cleveland its second out.
The Lady Owl pitcher was unable to close out the inning on the next batter, and wound up handing out a free pass to Teliyah Cobb.
With runners on first and second, Lady Raiders pitcher Haley Hodgson’s deep hit to right field drove in Sparks, and left runners on second and third.
A shaky performance by the Ooltewah pitcher loaded up the bases, and another free pass walked in the second run.
The final run was driven in by Allison Botts.
Despite going the distance, the Lady Raiders were unable to stop the Lady Owls from adding five more runs in the top of the seventh.
“Overall we’re doing a better job and are able to compete with other teams. The score doesn’t reflect overall how the game went,” Stobert declared.
Cleveland continues tough District 5-AAA play on Thursday at 5 p.m. when East Hamilton comes to town.
