ATHENS — After dropping a pair of matches to in-county rivals, Cleveland High’s volleyball team got back in the win column Thursday with a sweep of McMinn County in District 5-AAA play.

"The girls played consistent tonight and never let up,” commented Lady Raider coach Patricia Flowers. “After a two really tough losses to our local rivals, it was just nice to see the girls play so well.”

“We had a total of nine aces and only three errors,” she added “Offensively we had 34 kills and only seven errors. Passers got the ball to the setters and that's what we want. "

Cleveland captured the match by scores of 25-5, 25-7, 25-15 to improve 2-4 in district play. The Lady Raiders will travel to Chattanooga this weekend for the Tennessee Tandem Tournament.

Marissa Langford and Cassie Hale led the victory with a dozen kills apiece, while Jessica Murray had seven kills, seven digs and a pair of aces.

“Langford and Murray had no hitting errors, gaining their highest hitting percentages of the season,” coach Flowers related.

Eva Wilhelm had 15 digs and four aces for the Lady Raiders, while freshmen Kellee Geren helped out with 18 assists and nine digs.

Cleveland will return to district play with a trip to Soddy-Daisy Tuesday.
