Coach Paul Furey was happy to bring his fighting Flames back to Cleveland with the win. Lee improved to 8-5 overall and 3-4 in the all-important SSAC race and moved ahead of Shorter and Southern Wesleyan in the close conference standings.
The Emmanuel stats show the Lions out-shooting the Flames, 19-16. Lee had seven shots on goal and Emmanuel 11. Sophomore goalkeeper Ben Perez was credited with 11 saves for the second time this season. He also had 11 on Oct. 6 against Auburn-Montgomery. Emmanuel’s Anel Lilic had six saves in defeat.
The Flames will be hosting Southern Poly (8-2, 4-2) on Saturday afternoon at 7 p.m. The Hornets are ranked 17th in the latest NAIA poll. “We will have to play a lot better on Saturday,” noted the Lee coach. SPSU is currently in fifth place in the SSAC.

FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. — Lee’s surging women’s soccer team would not let a 6 a.m. wake-up call, a long bus ride, and steady rain slow down its high-powered offense. The No. 2-ranked Lady Flames zipped to a 7-0 halftime lead in posting a 10-0 victory over Emmanuel College.
The 12 noon kick-off time was not exactly what coach Matt Yelton would have ordered up for a weekday game, but his Lady Flames rode two goal performance by Jamie Achten, Ode Fulutidulu, Kathryn Healy and Lauren Welch to their 10th win against two defeats. It was Lee’s seventh straight win after a loss to No.1-ranked Lindsey Wilson on Sept. 17.
Amy Cochran, Leah Fortune and Achten had two assists each. Stephanie Surgener, Laura Thacker, Debbie Rogers, Welch and Brannen each contributed an assist.
“Today was a really good showing by our team and I thought we did an excellent job of coming out ready to play,” said Yelton. “It would have been easy to make excuses after having to get up and leave campus at 6 a.m. and playing under some pretty poor weather conditions, but we did a great job of getting off the bus ready to play.”
That was certainly an understatement. The Lady Flames had the Lady Lions down 5-0 in the first 15 minutes of the match.
“We were able to get the entire roster at least 30 minutes of play and I saw some great things out of our team,” Yelton pointed out. “It was really good to get a glimpse of the quality of depth that we have in our program.”
Like all successful coaches, he wasted little time before turning his attention to the next match. “Saturday will be a crucial contest as Brenau has produced some very good results this year and we will have to put in another good performance to stay undefeated in the league,” he added. Saturday kickoff is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Lee Soccer Field.
The Lady Flames will be without three-year starter Clair Lanter. The veteran defender when down with an ankle injury and could miss several starts.
