Lee tennis teams fall to nationally ranked squads

PENSACOLA, Fla. — The Lee University tennis teams made the long trip to the Florida Panhandle to face some stiff nationally ranked competition over the weekend at the Ralph "Skeeter" Carson Tennis Complex on the University of West Florida campus.

The Flames (1-10, 1-6 GSC) fell 5-0 to No. 13 Valdosta (Ga.) State and 9-0 to No. 1 West Florida, while the Lady Flames (3-10, 2-6 GSC) face a trio of the top NCAA Division II squads.

Lee returns home to face Delta State University (Miss.) on Friday. The GSC match is scheduled for 1 p.m.

No. 1 West Florida 9

Flames 0

The Argonauts (17-0. 6-0 GSC) earned a 3-0 lead following the doubles matches. Daniel Hardesty and Richard Gamble lost 8-3 to Carlos Moura and Pedro Roese at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Kenny Brasil and Douglas Boe won 8-2 over Westley Lemke and Alberto Calle, while Richard Hornby and Guilherme Canineo defeated Vincent Audy and Kevin Tan 8-1.

Lemke was edged by Ture Skinner at No. 6 singles. Skinner held on to win 6-3, 6-4. Hardesty was trumped by Roese 6-1 and 6-3.

Calle won three games from Boe and Gamble garnered two games against Domenico Sano.

No. 13 Valdosta State 5

Flames 0

The Blazers (10-2, 4-0 GSC) carried a 3-0 lead out of the doubles competition and tallied the team win with victories at the No. 4 and No. 6 singles spots.

Francisco Yim Kim and Mario Navarro Bayo defeated Gamble and Hardesty, 8-3. Tammo Haake and Sebastian Jasyk teamed up to take down Calle and Lemke by the same score. Gereon Heitmann and Joachim Schemm were 8-1 winners against Tan and Audy.

In singles action, Heitmann won 6-2 and 6-1 against Tan at No 4 singles. Haake held off Lemke to win at No 6 singles, 6-4 and 6-3.

Lady Flames

The Lady Flames faced conference foes Valdosta State University and West Florida on Saturday and stepped out of conference to face Nova Southeastern University on Sunday.

Lee fell 6-0 to No. 15 Valdosta State, 9-0 to No. 9 West Florida and 5-0 to No. 16 Nova Southeastern.

Lady Flames 0

The Sharks (13-5) won all three doubles matches and two singles matches to earn the victory in the shortened nonconference match.

Tonya McGraner and Maclain Yowarsky fell to Alex Kaeser and Sabrina Kierberg, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles. Juliet Serabian and Linda Kornienko defeated Kelsey Lovingood and Annie Sandberg, 8-1. At No. 2 doubles, Jodie Rice and Krista Good were beaten 8-0 by Alex Johansson and Carlee Rizzolo.

Morgan Friedlander won two games from Alex Kaeser at No. 6 singles, while Yowarsky lost 6-0, 6-0 to Rizzolo.

No. 9 West Florida 9, Lee 0

The Argonauts (13-4. 6-0 GSC) lost one point in claiming a 3-0 lead after the doubles competition and claimed straight-set wins in all six singles matches, winning 72 of the 81 games.

No. 15 Valdosta State 6

Lady Flames 0

The Blazers (8-2, 4-0 GSC) won the three doubles matches by a combined 24-3 score to take a 3-0 lead, then won the No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches to post the time-shortened match.

At No. 4 singles, Rice lost her first set to Sabrina Schmidt 6-0 before fighting back in the second set. Schmidt held Rice off to win the second set 6-4.
