“Dig Into Gardening: Helping your garden survive the summer” by Master Gardener Johnnie Arnett will be held May 23 at 7 p.m. in the Community Room. Arnett will share information on native plants that thrive in our area and how to keep your garden flourishing this summer. A Master Gardener since 1999, she is currently project coordinator for the Bradley County Master Gardeners. This program is part of the summer adult reading program, “Groundbreaking Reads,” and is open to the public.

The library is offering a class in Japanese this summer. It will begin June 5 and will continue each Monday and Wednesday through June and July. There will be two classes offered, 10 or 11 a.m. The classes will be taught by Yumi Nomura, who was born in China, and a Japanese citizen since she was 16. She is a multilingual speaker in Chinese, Japanese, English and German. She wants to share her love of language and believes learning a new language is the key to opening the door to a new world.

To register for this class, call the library at 472-2163, ext. 126. The classes will be limited in size and minimum age will be 16.

The Scholastic Summer Reading Book Fair begins May 25 and continues through June 3. Now is the time to stock up on your summer reading materials at special savings. In addition to books, there will be posters, pencils and miscellaneous desk accessories. Books also make wonderful children’s birthday gifts. Shop early for the best selection.

On Tuesday, the Lego Club will be having its last meeting until summer break is over. Join the group while they are putting together items for the “Boom Chicka Boom” show in November. The Lego Club has been sponsored in part by a grant from the Dollar General Store Literacy Program. All tweens, ages 6 through 11, can participate.

Calling all interested creative writers, age 9 through 14, for a “Scribblers” meeting on May 23 at 4:30 p.m. If you are interested in joining a creative writing group that will meet on the fourth Thursday of each month beginning in August, come to this informational meeting in the Children’s Library.

The library will be closed on May 27 in observation of Memorial Day.
