The Bradley County NAACP and the 100 Black Men of Bradley County will hold the 2012 African American Heritage Bowl on March 18 at Cleveland State Community College.
This will be an opportunity for middle and high school students to take part in a fun, yet competitive learning experience to gain a better understanding of the role of African Americans in American history.
Organizers are seeking middle and high school student contestants in the Cleveland/Bradley County area and adult volunteers to participate in the event.
For more information, anyone interested should attend the information session at College Hill Recreation Center at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.
The information session is for students and adults.
AARP to help
with tax returns
AARP tax aide will be preparing free tax returns for seniors and low income clients beginning Feb. 2.
The preparation will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Peak-Jones elected
president of local buiders
Charlotte Peak-Jones was elected president of the Ocoee Region Builders Association in December.
She is the first female to hold the position. She is also the Southeast Area vice president of Home Builders Association of Tennessee and on their board of directors.
Peak-Jones is actively involved in Habitat for Humanity and many other projects.
She was 2010 Ocoee Region Builders Association Builder of the Year and nominated 2011 Builder of the Year for Home Builders Association of Tennessee.
Ark Leave Alive plans

Lasting Memories Photographic will take pet photos Jan. 29, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., at PETCO of Cleveland.
There is a $10 sitting fee. A portion of all sales, will be donated to the Ark Leave Alive Shelter
Ark volunteers will also be at PETCO from 1 to 5 p.m. with select Ark pets.
The Ark Leave Alive Shelter, usually closed on Sundays, will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. for potential adopters to find their next forever friend.
Ten (five male and five female) finalists will be selected from those photographed to compete for the King and Queen of Hearts. Finalists will be posted on The Ark’s Facebook page and publicized at PETCO, allowing voters to pick their favorites. Votes will be accrued at $1 per vote.
Southern Heritage Bank will set up a special account at the Ark Leave Alive Shelter which will allow voters to come by or phone in their votes, during the week of Feb. 6, from 1 to 5 p.m., at 423-472-2744.
Winners will receive a personalized crystal heart, with their photo inside. Call 423-240-8265 to make an appointment.
