The 2013 Scovie Awards judging panel recently honored Clarkkhan Food Products for their Khan’s Island Sauce.
The sauce was a first place winner in the contest’s habanero hot sauce division. Clarkkhan’s winning product was applauded because of its flavor and appearance. The company wa up against other habanero sauces from all over the world, and Khan’s Island Sauce took first place.
Khan’s Island Sauce was launched in 2002 by Stan and Sharon Clark of Cleveland. This is the fourth time they have won a Scovie Award since 2003 and the second time they’ve taken first place.
The sauce is available locally and can be purchased at Cooke’s Food Store, Fresh and Low and BI-LO, and is also available at most locally owned restaurants. It is also distributed nationwide and can be found in tourist locations like Gatlinburg and Key West, Fla., at hot sauce retail stores.
“I have to give credit to my father-in-law, Shaheed Khan, for being the inspiration that triggered this whole idea almost 20 years ago,” Stan said. “Several years went by, and I perfected the recipe in our kitchen. With a lot of research and hard work, we were able to find a manufacturer to mass produce the sauce. From that point, the rest is history. Everyone loves our award-winning Khan’s Island Sauce.”
Competition for the 2013 Scovie Awards was stronger than ever, with a record-breaking 805 product entries.
Dave DeWitt, founder of the Scovie Awards and National Fiery Foods and Barbecue Show said entries came from 31 states and five countries, including Australia, Bermuda, Canada, England and the United States.
“We’re thrilled that participation in the Scovie Awards continues to skyrocket,” DeWitt said. “Companies recognize our awards as the most competitive blind taste-tested event in the world.”
The Scovie Awards is an annual competition created by DeWitt that recognizes the top fiery food products. The awards were named after the Scoville scale, a measurement of the spicy heat of a chili pepper. It is one of the most competitive blind tasted food competitions. Hundreds of products are entered and go through rigorous tastings to receive top honors.
