A freak accident claimed the life of a man late Wednesday afternoon as he was mowing with a lawn tractor at his Fernwood Drive address.

The victim was identified as Carl J. Smith, 70, according to Bradley County Sheriff’s Office media coordinator Bob Gault.

According to Stan Clark of Bradley County Emergency Medical Service, emergency first responders rushed to the scene about 5 p.m., after a neighbor found the victim.

Clark said initially the report from the scene was that Smith had been on a tractor.

Officials learned it had been a large John Deere lawn tractor the man had been using.

“When EMS arrived, it was confirmed Smith had died of injuries resulting in the lawn mower landing on top of him,” said Clark.

Gault said Smith had been mowing a section of his back yard that had a steeper grade.

Assisting at the scene were Bradley County Fire-Rescue and the Bradley County Medical Examiner’s Office along with Bradley County Sheriff’s Office deputies, who are in charge of the investigation.

Ralph Bucker Funeral Home and Crematory has charge of arrangements.
