Margaret Fish Chastain, 86, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Tuesday afternoon, March, 19, 2013, at the family residence.

She was the daughter of the late Olive Bicknell West Fish and Howard Martin Fish. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Chalmer Chastain, M.D.; her two sisters; and five brothers.

She was a graduate of Pottersville High School in Pottersville, N.Y. She also attended New Paltz State Teachers College in New Paltz, N.Y., and the Atlantic Union College in South Lancaster, Mass., where she met her husband, Chalmer.

She founded Cherokee Pharmacy and owned and operated it for four years. She also founded Health Concepts, a health food store.

She was very civic minded and a member of many organizations. She held offices in a number of organizations including Bradley County Medical Auxiliary where she was a past president; Pilot Club of Cleveland, past president twice; Magnolia Garden Club, past president; Boys Club of Cleveland, where she served for 35 years; Child Shelter Home, past president and chairman of the board for many years; Women’s Club of Cleveland, past president; Bradley County March of Dimes, past director and served on the board for many years; member of the Ladies Friendship Club of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she served as past president twice; past director of the Cleveland Pathfinders Club, where she was involved for more than 20 years; past home and school leader of Bowman Hills Seventh-day Adventist School; past president of the school board for Bowman Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church School; and past press secretary for Bowman Hills Church.

One of her favorite hobbies was to collect crystal. Her collection was started and inspired by Eleanor Roosevelt, who she served for as an intern at the age of 13 in 1940. She was a member of Bowman Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Survivors include her daughters: Tammy Hardeman and her husband, Michael, of Cleveland, and Marsharee Chastain of Atlanta; her sons: Dr. Allan Chastain and his wife, Jeannie, of Cleveland, Chad Chastain and his wife, Tira, of Signal Mountain, Dr. Christopher Chastain and his wife, Linda, of McDonald; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, Henry Fish and his wife, Anita, of Ellijay, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

The Remembrance of Life service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March, 22, 2013, from the Bowman Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church with Pastor Dwight Herod and Cleveland Mayor Tom Rowland officiating.

Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens with family and friends serving as pallbearers.

The body will lie in repose at the church from 1 to 2 p.m. for viewing prior to the service.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 this evening at the North Ocoee Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes.
