Mary Alice Higgs, 97, of Cleveland, passed away quietly at SkyRidge Medical Center in Cleveland, in the presence of her loving family on Wednesday, Sept. 4 2013, after a short illness.

She is now residing in Heaven with her Savior Jesus Christ. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who took great joy in spending time with her family.

She was always ready to participate in family activities and was so happy to be in Cleveland, where she could be a part of these events.

She and her husband Dr. Wilbur Higgs moved to Cleveland three years ago. She assisted Dr. Higgs for 25 years in his veterinary clinic in Madisonville. He called her to help one day when an assistant left the practice and stayed until his retirement. She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Wilbur Higgs; children: Joe Pesterfield (Peggy) and John Pesterfield (Gail), all of Cleveland; five grandchildren: Brian Pesterfield (Kim) of Cleveland, Andy Pesterfield (Leigh Ann) of Cleveland, Dr. Aimee Salazar (Dan) of San Jose Calif., Chris Pesterfield of Chattanooga, and Kelly Pesterfield of Knoxville; 10 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including two nieces with whom she was very close, Jonnie Scott of Jacksonville, Fla., and and Edna Mae Self of Maryville; other survivors include Dr. Higgs’s daughter, Kay Tucker (Junior) of Cleveland; their children: Jinna Ann Clifford, (Aidan) of Birmingham, Ala., Capt. Clark Tucker of Fort Meade, Md.; and Dr. Higgs sons: Ronnie Higgs (Pam) of Rockwood and Victor Higgs of Cleveland.

She was preceeded in death by the husband of her children, Jacob Ross Pesterfield, of Madisonville; seven sisters and one brother. She was the last surviving child of Isham and Susie Avens of Madisonville.

The family expresses their appreciation to the loving nurses and techs at SkyRidge Medical Center and Hospice who did everything they could to make her comfortable in her last days. It was apparent that they knew she was a treasure to her family.

The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, 2013, in the chapel of Biereley-Hale Funeral Home in Madisonville with Dr. Lon Shoopman officiating.

Interment will be in Haven Hill Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home in Madisonville.

Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Madisonville, TN, or to a favorite charity.
