“We are very excited about adding Matt to our program,” said Maupin. “He is an excellent fit all the way around. Matt had a very good junior golf career and has proven that he can play well under pressure. All that said, I still think Matt has only scratched the surface of what he can do as a golfer. He has a bright future ahead and I am glad he chose Lee University to be a part of that.”
What directed Johnson toward the Lee program? “The great athletic atmosphere that Lee has,” he responded. “The golf team is very welcoming and all the guys are easy to get along with. The campus is one of the newest and nicest in the country, and coach Maupin is one of the best golf coaches out there. He creates a comfortable setting. The Christian-based school provides all the tools necessary to grow in faith.”
Lee’s first recruit for next season said he wants to compete and get as much playing time as possible, eventually winning individual and team titles, and striving in his academics.
Johnson was the 2011 Coffee County Rookie Golfer of the Year, and the 2013 Red Raider Player of the Year and MVP. He was a member of the winning 2013 Tennessee Junior Cup East Team. Johnson was also selected to the TSSAA 2013 AAA-Tournament Team, and finished 10th overall. He was also the 2013 regional tournament runner up, qualified for 2013 Tennessee Men’s Open, and had multiple wins and runner-up finishes on the TGA Junior Tour.
“I’m looking forward to helping the team win multiple tournament titles, having the best college experience that Lee can provide, and getting a quality education,” said Johnson.
