On a recent Saturday morning, more than 90 friends came out to support Mayfield Elementary kindergartener Braydon Morgan in the Great Strides Walkathon at Lee University benefitting the fight against cystic fibrosis.

Braydon was diagnosed with CF early this year.

Erin Cole, Braydon’s kindergarten teacher, said she realizes it is her responsibility to teach the many skills children must acquire prior to first grade. Reading, addition, subtraction, and sentence structure are just a few of many. However, one life skill she believes outweighs any academic standard is that of compassion.

After learning of Braydon’s diagnosis, Cole called Mayfield’s BEST (Business and Education Serving Together) Partner, Keller Williams Realty, to inquire if it would be interested in donating T-shirts for all of the kindergarten students in an effort to raise money and awareness for CF research through the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Steve Black, broker at Keller Williams, along with Maryann Azambuja of First American Home Buyer Protection Plan, agreed to donate more than 100 T-shirts to the cause.

With the support of fellow educators Punky Gibson, Yolanda Edwards and Claudia Parker, Cole and the entire kindergarten class formed Team Braydon. In just one week the four kindergarten classes raised more than $900 for Team Braydon. The Friday before the walk the students were given their T-shirts and proudly wore them all day. As the energized students entered the gym for a team photo, they chanted loudly, “Braydon, Braydon, Braydon!”

Cole certainly does believe Mayfield has a compassionate group of not only kindergarteners and their parents, but also community leaders like Steve Black and Maryann Azambuja, who model compassion daily by showing the students they matter!
