Flames of all colors will streak down the sides of motorcycles Aug. 25 at the second fundraiser for the Saint Therese Military Support Group.

Patriot Guard and Gold Wing riders will display their motorcycles in the church parking lot at 900 Clingan Ridge Drive.

Muriel Quinn organized the group in late 2010 after her Marine son, Sean, was deployed to Afghanistan in support of Enduring Freedom.

“I didn’t know anything about the Marine Corps and I didn’t know how to find out anything,” she said recently. “I didn’t know who to contact or how to contact them for information.”

With one deployment in the past, the Marine mom is better prepared for the next one coming up in the near future.

“I still don’t know as much as I’d like, but I know more about where to find answers,” she said. “We talk to each other about what we’re going through.”

The support group began when seven dedicated relatives wanted to send boxes to husbands, wives, sons, daughters, co-workers, friends and next-door neighbors of men and women in the armed forces.

The show is bigger this year and Quinn is hopeful of a larger event in 2013 and beyond.

“Unfortunately, there will always be a need to support our troops deployed overseas,” she said.

The bike show is a fundraiser for shipping care packages to U.S. military personnel overseas and cards and letters of thanks to stateside service members. Quinn said they spent about $850 shipping packages to 50 addresses in 2011.

“We are required to mail care packages to specific addresses,” she said. “Anyone who wants to provide an address of anyone in the military.”

Award plaques will be presented in the categories of Best American, Best Metric, Best Custom and People’s Choice.

The public is invited to look at the bikes, eat plenty of hot dogs, chips and drinks, then buy something sweet at the bake sale.

Vendors are welcome.

There are plenty of door prizes and the top prize is a 55-inch Sanyo flat screen TV.

The Military Support Group meets the second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. in the Trinity Room.

Patriot Guard Ride Capt. George Burgan said local businesses have been very receptive to donating door prizes.

The former Marine was fortunate enough to be a peacetime veteran in the 1970s.

He joined the Patriot Guard because he believes in showing respect and honor to the troops “just to let them know people haven’t forgotten about them or the sacrifices they’ve made to keep this country free.”

The local Patriot Guard chapter is helping the Military Support Group because “they are a good bunch of ladies with really good intentions. It’s something they believe strongly in and anything we can do to help them out, that’s what we’re going to do.”
