The former Mrs. Winner’s restaurant is now called Umphy’s, according to Todd Duggan of DWE Inc.
It’s the same quality of food with a couple of additions and a few changes. It is basically the same food you loved as Mrs. Winner’s,” noted Hilda Pierce, manager of the local restaurant for 32 years.
In November 2012, the Atlanta-based Mrs. Winner’s Chicken and Biscuits filed for bankruptcy. After the attorney for Mrs. Winner’s gained control and rights to the name, the Mrs. Winner’s restaurants basically became “franchises without a franchisor.”
The Piedmont Restaurant Group in High Point, N.C., which had seven restaurants, changed its name to Umphy’s. Umphy was a nickname of the franchise owner Paul Umphenour.
The local restaurant also became an Umphy’s.
Pierce noted they had the same “great people working and we still have great food.”
While some of the pre-made ingredients from the Mrs. Winner’s recipes had to be changed, the differences are minimal and very tasty, according to Duggan and Pierce.
The restaurant menu still includes chicken dinners, hand-breaded tenders, chicken biscuits, sausage and gravy biscuit, bacon and sausage platter, and more.
You can still receive family meals and boxes with the fixings and Umphy’s fresh brewed iced tea.
Umphy’s has a $5 menu that includes a breast dinner combo with breast of chicken, one side, biscuit and drink; steak dinner combo with two steaks, a side, biscuits and drink; a three-piece dinner combo with three dark chicken pieces, a side, biscuit and drink; and a tender dinner combo with three chicken tenders, a side biscuit and drink.
Umphy’s is committed to “using only the highest quality ingredients and old-fashion methods for preparing delicious fried chicken and made-from-scratch biscuits.”
The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday, 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Umphy’s also caters special events, and works with organizations and churches.
They have coupons inserted in the Banner either the first or last Wednesday of the month so customers can pick up some great-tasting deals. More coupon deals are available at Umphys.com.
Umphy’s is located at 2487 Keith St., adjacent to Star Plaza. For information on catering or special orders, call 476-7266.
