A 34-point quarter broke open a tie game as the Mustangs galloped past the host squad in the Dade County (Ga.) Christmas Tournament, Friday night.
With the participants and fans leaving the gym with ringing in their ears after 58 fouls were whistled, the Mustangs were able to post their highest point total of the season with an 81-60 victory.
Walker Valley (9-6) returned to Trenton, Ga., Saturday evening and outscored Ridgeland in each of the four quarters for a 69-51 win.
Coach Bob Williams’ Stallions will now take some time off before returning to District 5-AAA play Jan. 8 at local rival Cleveland High..
Dade County (10-2) raced out to a 17-10 advantage at the first break, but the Mustangs came racing back with an 18-11 run in the second frame to even the contest at the intermission.
After “missing 14 layups in the first half,” Walker Valley put together its most productive period of the season, exploding for a 34-16 scoring edge in the third quarter, before the hosts outscored them by a point in the final eight minutes.
Jackson Brownfield and Lukas Korn both posted double-doubles to lead the way for the Mustangs.
Brownfield netted a team-high 17 points and cleaned the glass for 14 rebounds, while Korn helped out with 13 points and 10 caroms.
Caio Hysinger sizzled a dozen points for the victors, plus dished out seven assists, while Dustin Swafford netted nine points.
Cole Birchfield drained a trio of 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 22 points to pace Dade County.
Walker Valley made just 21-of-41 free throws in the whistle-blown affair, while the home team made 22-of-34 freebies.
Mustangs 69, Ridgeland 51
Dishing out 23 assists on 27 made baskets, Walker Valley had the hot hand, shooting 66 percent from the floor for the contest.
Leading 15-11 at the first break, the Mustangs were up by a half dozen by intermission.
A 24-15 run in the third frame all but sealed the deal before the Mustangs outscored the Panthers 19-16 down the stretch.
Korn led the balanced winning attack with 14 points, while Austin Harwood helped out with 13, plus he dished off five assists.
Tucker Godfrey netted 11 points for the victors, with Hysinger and Brownfield netting seven points apiece.
Hysinger also handed out seven helps, plus copped four steals, while Brownfield cleared a half dozen rebounds and gave out five assists.
