EVENSVILLE — Walker Valley was able to outlast Rhea County and the falling snowflakes to pick up its fourth district win Wednesday evening.

The Golden Eagles got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a run by Jalen Smith.

Despite the frigid temperatures, the Mustang bats got warmed up starting in the fourth.

The scoring began with a single by Logan Melton, which was able to get Josh Poole home from second base.

Austin Scott’s sacrifice bunt brought Melton home, giving Walker Valley a one run lead over Rhea County.

The one-run lead was short lived as the Eagles went on a scoring spree, racking up six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Walker Valley was able to make up for its three costly errors during the sixth inning.

After the first two batters struck out, the Mustangs went on to score six runs of their own.

A single by Caleb Longley loaded the bases, setting the stage for the start of the runs.

Rhea County pitcher Hunter McClendon hit Kamren Barnes with a stray pitch, which brought John Simmons home and kept the bases loaded.

Further inconsistent pitching kept the Mustangs in a repeat scoring position, as Drew Lyles was walked, getting Bradley Smith a run.

Poole tripled and added runs by Longley, Barnes, and Lyles. Pool was able to get another run thanks to a wild pitch.

Walker Valley was once again ahead of Rhea County by one, and relief pitcher John Simmons was able to get the save, holding the Eagles runless for the remainder of the game.

The Mustangs tallied up three more runs in the seventh coming from Smith, Longley and Lyles.

Longley scored on an error and Chase Prince was walked with the bases-loaded, which brought Lyles home for the final run.

NCAA Division II signee Lyles was the winning pitcher for the Mustangs. Lyles pitched five innings and had five strikeouts and five walks.

Walker Valley will take on Chattanooga Central tonight at Mike Turner Field, with a start time of 7 p.m.
