Patten’s mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2007. Since then, Patten has been active in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s. Her team name was “Love Nancy” in honor of her mother’s battle with the disease. Nancy Patten died in February in 2013.
Now, Patten is pursuing nonprofit status for “Love Nancy.“
“I continued with Love Nancy in wanting to do something in her honor,” Patten said. “We are officially an organization, and we want to provide respite support for caregivers of those living with Alzheimer’s disease or progressive memory loss.”
The organization’s first event, “Pajamas for Your Mama,” is going on through April 30.
Patten said she chose the event because her “mom loved pajamas.”
Things were difficult for her. Putting on clothes, she wanted to be comfortable … she loved being in pajamas at home,” Patten said.
Patten is collecting new pajamas, slippers, housecoats and socks. A variety of sizes and styles for men and women are needed.
Various local business owners, who have known Patten for years, have agreed to host collection points for the pajama drive. Patten plans to sort the donations and then take them to each of the local facilities that serve those with Alzheimer’s disease or progressive memory loss.
Some of the locations have special significance, such as the health care facility Nancy Patten lived while battling Alzheimer’s disease and Cleveland State Community College’s nursing department, from which Nancy Patten graduated.
There are a total of 13 drop-off locations. Patten said every one she asked was willing to be a part.
April was chosen as the month to collect the items so they would be delivered near Mother’s Day and Father’s Day.
Patten said she would contact each facility to see what is needed at that location.
“There are families out there that have greater needs,” Patten said.
Patten said her family and friends in the community have been very supportive.
“What Love Nancy hopes to do is provide a Love Nancy ‘CAREavan’ where we can distribute items for caregivers for their loved ones,” Patten said.
