Mr. and Mrs. Max Phillips of Cleveland announce the engagement of their daughter, Courtney Sloane, to James Richard Cogdill, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Cogdill, also of Cleveland.

The couple will be united in marriage in an 11 a.m. ceremony on May 28 at Destin, Fla.

The bride-elect is the granddaughter of Mrs. Jack Adams of Cleveland, the late Dr. Jack Adams, Samye Jean Sloan of Cleveland and the late Guye Taylor Phillips. She is the sister of Guye Taylor Phillips II of Cleveland.

Miss Phillips is a 2003 graduate of Cleveland High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in biology and a master’s degree in education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She is a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

The future bridegroom is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Kelly of Dunlap, the late Richard Jefferson Cogdill and the late Gladys Verble Cogdill. He is the brother of Kelly Cogdill Bishop of Knoxville.

Mr. Cogdill is a 2003 graduate of Cleveland High School and attended Cleveland State Community College. He obtained an associate degree in turf grass management from Walter’s State Community College and his bachelor’s degree in business management from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He is employed by Tennessee National Golf Course in Loudon. He is a member of First United Methodist Church.
