BENTON — After falling behind twice early in the game, Polk County bounced back twice and then ran away for a nine-run victory over Sweetwater Monday to remain unbeaten in District 5-AA play.

Falling behind 1-0 and 3-1 in the first two innings, the host Lady Wildcats came clawing back to even the score in the first frame and then took the lead for good in the third on their way to a 12-3 victory over the girls from Monroe County.

Now 15-9 on the season and 6-0 in 5-AA play, Polk County will step out of the district this afternoon as Class AAA Bradley Central comes to Benton for a 5:30 first pitch.

After Sweetwater scored in its first at bat, Polk pulled even with a run in its initial offensive try as senior Lydia Triplett laced a one-out double and scored when Lily Cuzzort did the same.

The visitors were able to regain an advantage in the top of the second, scoring twice on an error and maintained that lead until the bottom of the third when Polk put a 3-spot on the scoreboard.

A walk to Kaitlyn Williams and back-to-back hits by Cuzzort and Hannah Triplett got the rally going with the latter of those hits plating a pair of runs for the home team. Emily Bates capped the streak with a run-scoring single of her own.

Polk added another three-run rally in the fourth with Cuzzort driving in Ashlyn Johnson, who had walked before Hannah Triplett plated two more teammates (Williams and Cuzzort) with a single.

A five-run streak in the bottom of the fifth capped the victory for Polk with Felecia Johnson, Williams and Hannah Triplett each driving in a runs.

Hannah Triplett went 3-for-4 to drive in five runs in the victory, while Cuzzort also went 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs.

Williams reached base three times with a double, single and walk in five trips to the plate, plus she drove home a teammate.

Jordan Triplett went the distance in the circle for the hosts, striking out a half dozen and not giving up a walk, but she did allow 10 Sweetwater hits.
