From there, the Wildcats (3-1) fooled nobody with their back-to-business, hard-nosed style of play ringing up 41 first-half points on their way to a 54-14 drubbing of winless Chattanooga Christian School.
"It was a good game. We finally got what we wanted, and that is taking care of business early and getting younger kids in. I told them in pregame this is a long season. I tried to get across to them they could go in at any time. They have to be ready," Polk coach Derrick Davis said. "Tonight we didn't play (Justin) Green and the (Aaron) Caldwell went out. There are our two linebackers. We got a lot of experience tonight for some of the younger guys. That's great because we are going to need some of these guys who haven't necessarily been starting the first four games to help us down the road."
Polk's second possession resulted in a Chris Wimberley TD from 21 yards out to make it 14-0.
With just over three minutes left in the first quarter, Coffey capped a three-play, 57-yard stroll with a 55-yard strike to Justin Brown.
The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a 19-yard jaunt by Coffey to go up 27-0.
After taking a 34-0 lead on a Josh Silas 16-yard run, Polk answered a Chattanooga Christian score with a Coffey to Brown connection to take a 41-6 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats opened the second half without the services of Calwell who watch from the sideline after aggravating a knee irritation. Davis also pulled starting fullback Zach Miller after the first play of the third quarter. Miller picked up six yards on the play and rested with an even 100 yards rushing.
"Caldwell's knee is hurting him a little bit. I don't think it's a tear, it's just hurting him. It is a knee that has caused him problems in the past, but we think he'll be OK. We'll get him looked at Monday," Davis said of his big tight end/linebacker.
Caldwell, along with Wimberley and Ryan Rowland all stepped up with drive stopping interceptions for Polk County.
With sophomore Isaac Smith under center, the Wildcats mostly second unit put together a 60-yard drive. The march concluded with a Will Richmond 2-yard plunge to paydirt and a 48-6 lead.
"That was good. It was great to see them get out there and not be able to take a snap. We looked pretty decent. It builds excitement with the young guys getting in, but hats off to our varsity. A couple of series there we didn't look really good. But, overall I am real pleased with our guys," Davis said .
The Chargers added one more touchdown early in the fourth quarter that was immediately answered by the Wildcats.
Led by the signal calling of Smith, Polk drove 80 yards in eight plays with Smith calling his own number for the final three yards giving Polk its 54-14 winning margin.
The Wildcats will rest up this weekend and begin preparation for Sweetwater in their second district game of the year.
"This is a good win, but we have a big district game next week. I want these guys to enjoy this one, but Monday we have to get ready for Sweetwater," said an already thinking ahead Davis. "They are 4-0 and hopefully, we'll pick it up in practice a little bit with some of these guys because they know they have a shot at getting in there."
