Polk battles to ‘States’ win

HIAWASSEE, Ga. — In the first day of the Battle of the States Tournament the Polk County Wildcats (3-10) found a winning combination, and were able to snag a 47-43 win over Murphy (N.C.) High School.

The Wildcats came out ahead at the start, finishing up the first quarter with an 11-9 lead over the Bulldogs.

Murphy fought back, outscoring Polk by nine points to take a 26-19 lead at the half.

In the third quarter the Wildcats were able to flip things around and outscore the Bulldogs by nine points, which gave them a 36-34 lead going into the final quarter.

With the game tied up at 40-all with 1:29 left in the game, Cody Groomes scored the final seven points for Polk, hitting two 3-pointers and a free throw.

Groomes finished the game with a total of 25 points, which included four treys and five rebounds in the Wildcats’ four-point victory over Murphy.

Will Richmond had nine points, which included a 3-pointer.

The Wildcats have advanced in the winner’s bracket and will face Hayesville, N.C., at 5:30 p.m. tonight.
