After taking a doubleheader from the Raiderettes on Friday, the ball would not find the gloves of the Lady Cougars. CSCC dropped both ends of the Saturday twin bill by a score of 2-1 in the first game and 6-4 in game two.
The Raiderettes jumped on top in game one when Mica Gaines singled, moved to second on a walk and later scored on a pair of Lady Cougar miscues for a 1-0 lead.
The error bug bit the Lady Cougars again in the bottom of the fourth inning after the home team tacked on a run on a walk, a groundout and an error to push their lead to 2-0.
The Lady Cougars cut the lead in half in the top of the fifth when Ashley Swaney belted a solo home run, but that would be all they could muster. The Raiderettes finished strong to take game one.
Gaines got the win for Roane State while Kelsey Haley took the loss for Cleveland State, despite giving up only two hits and no earned runs.
“Roane clearly wanted it more than us today,” stated Lady Cougar coach Katie Willingham. “The errors are killing us. We have to work harder to win more conference games if we want to make the conference tournament.”
The Lady Cougars jumped out to a quick lead in game two in their first turn at the plate. Leslie Still singled, stole second and scored on a single by Maura Ditto for a 1-0 lead.
The Raiderettes tied the game in the bottom of the frame when Melissa Buchanan doubled and came around to score on yet another Lady Cougar error.
A Raiderette error in the second helped start a Cleveland State rally after Emily Huston reached base, stole second and scored on a single by Ciera Belcher. Jasmine Cobb picked up an RBI with a groundout as the Lady Cougars took a 3-1 lead.
The lead didn't last long, however. The home team dialed long distance twice in the bottom of the third. Courtney Taylor hit a two-run shot and Molly Crain added a solo homer to put her team on top 4-3.
The see-saw battle continued in the fourth when the Lady Cougars tied the game once again. Huston started the inning with a single and later scored on a grounder from Belcher.
The Raiderettes had the final say in the outcome, putting a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth. Kayla Crisp doubled and later scored on a passed ball and Taylor added an insurance run with an RBI single to finish the win and complete the sweep.
Bridgit Cook got the win for Roane State while Kelsey Capella took the loss for Cleveland State (3-9, 2-6).
The Lady Cougars will host Gordon College Tuesday for a pair of games at 2 p.m. and Columbia State for four games next weekend.
