TELLICO PLAINS — The scene was the same thing, only different for Polk County when it finally arrived at Tellico Plains High School to play 20 minutes of uninterrupted football in their 2012 football jamboree.

The Wildcats were advised by jamboree official to delay their appearance on the Plains after heavy rains and lightning stalled the festivities for more than an hour.

When the green flag eventually dropped on the mucky festival, the Wildcats scored twice on three possessions and defeated the Meigs County Tigers 12-0.

"We looked pretty good. We came out solid on offense and even had a good throw. We didn't run but about four plays with the varsity," Polk assistant coach Larry Davis said.

The Wildcats started on defense and held the Tigers to three plays and a dead-play punt to take over on the Meigs County 35-yard line.

From there, the Wildcats ran once on the ground for no gain before senior quarterback Duncan Coffey set up in the pocket and found an open Marcus Green for a 33-yard pick up to the Tigers' 2-yard line. On the next play, Zach Miller took the handoff from Coffey and plowed into the endzone for the score.

"We talked about keeping it on the ground, but they were running a six-man front and had everybody crammed up on the line of scrimmage, so we threw it," Davis said of the two-play scoring drive.

After again forcing a punt from Meigs County, the 'Cats began their second series on their own 30-yard line. The drive lasted exactly one play when Miller broke through the line and raced 70 yards for his second TD of the night.

Both Polk extra-point attempts fell short.

Sophomore field general Isaac Smith took control of the offense on the Wildcats' final offensive series and led the second unit on a 48-yard march to the Meigs 12. A fumble recovered by the Tigers stopped the drive with just over three minutes left in the game.

"We didn't know what we would do on a wet field, that was different for us. But, we're happy. We got the win and now we will go back to the drawing board and get ready for next week," said Davis.

“We're pleased. We're healthy right now and we will hopefully continue to stay healthy. Now we have to get ready to play real football. They keep score next week."

Polk opens the 2012 TSSAA regular season by hosting Bradley Central Friday night in Benton.
