— On Sept. 24, KAB will be part of the MainStreet Cruise-In.
“It’s the first time doing the MainStreet Cruise-In,” said Jim Davis, president of the local KAB organization.
The group will be selling food, including popcorn, to raise money. Volunteers are needed.
— On Oct. 29, from 7 to 10:30 a.m., the KAB will hold its annual Pancake Breakfast fundraiser at Applebee’s restaurant.
— On Oct. 31, KAB will take part in the annual Halloween Block Party by helping to give out candy provided by the local Mars Chocolate company.
In a recent monthly session, KAB members also considered the four-year term limit rule.
“My concern is having good people,” said Shane Lawson, a member of the board of directors. Valuable members might not return once they have to take a minimum year’s break. “I just think (term limits) can hurt.”
The issue sparking the vote was between getting new people on the board versus losing people’s service if they are made to step down for at least a year after serving for four years.
The board voted to make changes to the bylaws and get rid of four-year term limits.
It was also announced that both Santek Environmental and GreenStream Recycling will help sponsor KAB’s membership breakfast to be held in October.
KAB currently also is taking nominations for its board, hoping to get a cross section of representatives from various areas including churches, organizations, garden clubs, educators, concerned citizens and the media.
Bender Realty was awarded KAB’s Beautification Award for August. This award is available to all of Bradley County.
“We’re always looking for suggestions (for potential winners),” said Shari Horton, board vice president.
Cleveland High School’s recycling program received KAB’s most recent White Glove Award.
The board’s education committee has decided to emphasize the topic of “Recycling: Litter and Energy,” as well as provide an in-class program on growing sunflowers.
Middle school classes specifically will have the chance to be part of a rain barrel-painting contest. The entries will be displayed at the Spring Greenway Cleanup. Local artists and professors from Cleveland State Community College and Lee University will decide the winners. Money from the subsequent auction will go to the middle school class winners. The tentative date of the presentation of the winner is April 21, 2012.
In addition, KAB also is sponsoring an essay contest for the high schools. The four topics are:
— What is the best way to address environmental concerns in your community?
— Do your local governments do enough to promote the environment?
— Can one person make a difference when it comes to the environment? How?
— Why and how should we improve energy consumption?
