He was the son of the late Earl and Emma Meeks. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Meeks.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in Vietnam and receiving the Bronze Star, Combat Infantry Badge, Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.
He retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services as a case manager with more than 10 years of service. He was a member of Mountain Creek Church of Christ in Chattanooga.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Meeks; son, Steven Meeks and his wife, Betsy, of North Charleston S.C.; daughter, Melissa Behrans of Chicago; stepdaughters: Anna Scoggins of LaFayette, Ga., Laura Wilson of Chattanooga, Erin Cole of Cleveland, and Suzanne Burke of Daytona Beach, Fla.; stepsons: Daniel Hurst and Glenn Hurst, both of Chattanooga; several grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; one brother, Richard Meeks of North Charleston S.C.; two sisters: Norma Thomas and Debbie Altman, both of North Charleston; and several nieces and nephews.
A Remembrance of life graveside service at the Chattanooga National Cemetery will be announced at a later date.
The North Chapel of Jim Rush Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
