Sherrill W. Hayes, 89, a resident of Old Fort, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at his home.
He was a graduate of Bradley Central High School and served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II in the European theater.
He was employed with the State of Tennessee Department of Employment Security for 35 years. He was a member of Big Spring Baptist Church. He was an accomplished woodworker and was dedicated to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mae Epperson Hayes; his wife, Pauline “Polly” Hayes; daughter, Janice Williams; grandson, Michael Lee Williams; and brother, Gene Hayes.
He is survived by one son, James Hayes and wife, Johnnie, of Old Fort; two grandchildren: Lorie MacKenzie of Chapel Hill and Shelly Gurda of Murfreesboro; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Arnold Hayes of Murfreesboro; and three nieces and one nephew.
A graveside service with military honors will be held Monday, April 28, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Minister Shane Pierce officiating.
The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Monday at Ralph Buckner Funeral Home.
