Opening at 7 p.m. will be The Power Players. Nightfall is hosted each Friday at Miller Plaza through Aug. 29.
The Slide Brothers are Calvin Cooke, Chuck Campbell, Darick Campbell and Aubrey Ghent. The joyous music these legendary artists create extends far beyond scared steel to encompass blues, rock and soul — all celebrated with a sound uniquely their own.
They were raised in the Church of the Living God, where they had an opportunity to perform and travel at an early age. Throughout the years, the group has played live together sporadically, but hadn't released an album until 2012. Recorded for the jazz-based Concord label, the self-titled debut was co-produced by John McDermott and Robert Randolph, who is the leader of and pedal steel guitarist for the Family Band. The association with Randolph led to numerous concert appearances, many of which featured secular music.
The Slide Brothers were recently featured as part of the Experience Hendrix Tour, thrilling sold-out audiences across the U.S. and Canada with their interpretations of such Hendrix signature songs as “Purple Haze” and “Foxy Lady.” Their acclaimed performances have won fans who had never witnessed the infectious appeal of the sacred steel. The enthusiastic reactions came as no surprise to Robert Randolph.
“My goal is to open the door for people in the same way that musical doors have been opened for me,” explains Randolph. “I want to take this musical history and make it relevant to give people a better idea of who we are, and where this tradition came from. I think even though I’m a young guy who was born into the era of hip-hop and contemporary gospel, I can help bridge the cultural gap between people who are 75 years old and kids who are 15 years old by reaching back into this history of music.”
With a mixture of rockin' blues, electric funk, jazz, classic rock, and great Motown soul, The Power Players Show Band opens the show, delivering a variety of music with a multitalented lineup.
Presented and produced by Chattanooga Presents, Nightfall brings an eclectic mix of music to downtown Chattanooga. Nightfall showcases Chattanooga’s local arts community by featuring Chattanooga musicians for each opening act, followed by headline performances by national and international talent.
