Cleveland Police and Bradley County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man on burglary and other charges after investigation and an incident reported at a home on Leatha Lane.
During the investigation, officials learned Howard Callaway was allegedly responsible for 53 burglaries which have been reported during the past few months.
Callaway, 35, was charged by both agencies, according to Bob Gault, media relations coordinator for the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office.
“The Bradley County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call made on April 13 after a resident of Leatha Lane returned to her home for lunch and saw a man coming out of her residence,” according Gault.
Gault said according to reports filed by investigators, the woman confronted the man and he got into a car, put it in reverse and backed up, nearly striking the homeowner.
The victim was able to obtain pertinent information and provide a description of the suspect. Callaway was arrested at a Woodlawn Avenue address.
Detectives Brian Smith and Matt Jenkins with Cleveland Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division had been working with Captain Steve Lawson and detective Kevin White of BCSO’s Criminal Investigations Division in continuing the investigation into the April incident as well as a number of others Callaway was allegedly suspected of committing, according to Lawson and Smith.
“Since his arrest Callaway has cooperated with investigators to solve a series of burglaries in the city and county between Oct. 12, 2009, and the date of his arrest. The investigation revealed Callaway took only jewelry that resulted in combined losses in excess of $204,000. Most pieces were sold to a scrap metal dealer outside the county and could not be found when detectives attempted to recover the property,” said Gault.
Callaway remains in the Bradley County jail without bond on initial charges of aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and theft. He will face additional charges stemming from the 53 burglaries, according to Gault.
n A brief ceremony Friday morning will conclude Police Memorial Week.
According to officer Evie West of the Cleveland Police Department, the ceremony will be held at the Emergency Services Memorial at 200 Inman Street East beginning at 9 a.m.
“The Cleveland/Bradley County community will honor our local fallen police officers and those across the nation who have paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said West.
