Oleta Ownby opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Ruby Ball read from 1 Chronicles 1:8 and read “Thoughts of Thanksgiving.”
The program was presented by Kaye Smith on USDA food guidelines. They were first established in 1894 and were changed in 1904, 1943 and 1956. In 1992, a food guide pyramid was established and a new pyramid in 2009. Smith also emphasized the importance of reading labels, especially looking at the sodium content in processed and canned foods.
Members received tips on surviving the holidays without gaining weight, also.
Others present included Brenda Carder, Linda Brown, Bennie Jenkins, Joan Bryson, Doreen Johnson, Mary Bagley, Mary Ann Cornelius and Vergie Toomey.The December meeting will be held at the Little Old Fort Restaurant with members bringing clothing for the children at the Health Department.
