Christan Rose experienced what could best be described as a terrifying freak accident just over a year ago that could have ended her young life. In her remembrance of the event and appreciation of life, on the year anniversary of her accident, Christian wanted to go and spend some time with the EMS responders who responded to her accident.

In July 2013, 16 year old Christian Rose was working in a chicken house when something went terribly wrong. Christian’s hair got wrapped around a chicken feed auger device. Within seconds her hair and scalp was immediately ripped from the top and right side of her head. With the scalp removed, this allowed for exposure to the environment which could have caused very serious issues. The 911 system was activated and emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene.

The hair and scalp that had been removed was still wrapped around the auger. This was removed and carefully preserved to send to the hospital. Paramedics and EMT’s treated the head injury with bandaging and other treatment including IV’s and pain medicine administration. Due to the severity and uniqueness of the injury a medical transport helicopter was requested to respond and land on the scene. After all stabilization procedures were complete, she was flown by helicopter to U.T. Medical Center in Knoxville. The scalp was able to be reattached after multiple surgeries. She has made a great recovery. She is still undergoing periodic surgeries to her scalp. She is very thankful to everyone who was involved in her care.
