Today frustrated statesmen grapple with international problems as they labor to stave off war. Constantly we are beating our plowshares into swords (Joel 3:10) as our defense expenditures drain our treasures.

We seem to be living out the days predicted by Christ: “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. ... Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom” (Matthew 24:6, 7).

Iran rattles its sabers as it threatens to wipe Israel off the map and to bring America to account. Also, just as Khrushchev threatened America while slamming his shoe on the table and said, “We (Russia) will bury you in ’72,” today Islam blatantly says it will conquer us and rule America.

In these days of soft diplomacy, our national leaders need to relearn what John F. Kennedy said about standing firm: “Neither smiles nor frowns, neither good intentions nor harsh words, are a substitute for strength.”

We don’t like war; we hate it. Nevertheless, it is sometimes thrust upon us or we feel obligated to defend other countries.

Speaking of standing firm, during World War II, England was in a life-or-death struggle against Germany when Prime Minister Winston Churchill declared: “We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.”

However, the Bible tells of a time when Christ himself will rule the world; then war will cease. God’s Word declares: “They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more” (Micah 4:3).

At long last war will be over. No longer will sons, daughters, and husbands leave families and go away to war, not knowing whether they will return. No longer will the earth be “filled with violence” (Genesis 6:11).

Christ himself will keep the peace, and war will be outlawed. Battleships, fighter planes, guns, bombs, tanks, and all other implements of war will be destroyed or converted to peaceful purposes. Man will no longer kill man. What a glorious day!

Then the community and home will be safe; robbery and assaults will be unknown. “They shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid” (Micah 4:4).

The first coming of Christ brought individual peace through belief in His name. Christ’s Second Coming will bring a universal righteous peace to all mankind.

“On that day HOLY TO THE LORD will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the Lord’s house will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar. Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord Almighty” (Zechariah 14:20, 21).

May God speed the day when the will of God is done on earth as it is in Heaven!
