Two weeks ago, the Aqua Tigers finished the 2012 summer swim season with a record of 6-2, losing only to the Ooltewah Tidal Wave in the Red Division. They went on with 69 swimmers to compete in the Chattanooga Area Swim League City Meet Championship held at the Arlene Crye Pool in Gilbert Stephens Park in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.
CAT swam some of their best races of the summer and finished in sixth place overall out of the 15 teams in the league with a total of 993.5 points.
More than 900 swimmers ages 6-18 competed in events over the two-day competition despite downpours and high temperatures. Head coach Eric Frazier was thrilled with the meet and how well his team performed.
Earlier in the day swimmers competed in the preliminary events hoping to be one of the top 16 times to qualify for finals in the evening. Only the 200 free, 8-and-under 50 free, and 100 individual medley event and 200 medley and free relays were swum as a final race during the day.
On Saturday evening, the league also took time to recognize its seniors. CAT senior Bri Foley, team member for eight years, was the team’s nominee for the League’s Jennifer Fugate Scholarship. Each nominee was given flowers and a crystal plaque to commemorate their time spent swimming with the League. For Foley, it was bittersweet, knowing it was the last time she will compete for the CAT Swim team.
Team highlights of the championship included two first place finishes for the 13-14 boys 200 medley relay and free relay events, with Ben Cooper, Jason Chung, Adam Foster and Guy Shelton giving their best performances of the season, and another first place finish by Jacob McDaniel in the 8-and-under boys 50 freestyle event.
Jacob McDaniel also had an amazing second place overall finish in the boys 8-and-under 25 backstroke. Another noteworthy CAT swimmer was Spencer Payne, bringing a second place overall finish in the boys 8-and-under 25 breaststroke, Alexia Jackson with a third place overall finish in the girls 8-and-under 50 freestyle event and in the girls 25 butterfly races as well.
She also had a second place finish in the girls 25 backstroke event also. Grayson Payne had a third place finish overall in the girls 9-10 50 backstroke event. Ben Cooper took second place overall in the boys 13-14 butterfly, third place in the 50 freestyle, and a fifth place overall finish in the 13-14 boys 100 IM and 100 free, respectively. Cooper placed in the top 8 overall in each event he competed in.
