After some of the club members joined with another group, the rest continued to meet at Shoney’s Restaurant. The program was usually only conversation, after a blessing was offered.
When founder and hostess Martha Bostic was asked if she would be in charge of the club, she consented with the condition they would have the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag, prayer and a Bible devotion at each meeting. After a few meetings, it was decided to call it The United Club since, “United We Stand” as a club honoring God and country, explained Bostic.
The large crowd that attended initially has dwindled due to the passing of some (flowers are sent from club members in case of death) and those who can’t attend because of illness. Bana Clough, one of the original members, is unable to attend, but the club keeps in touch. Some of the members have never missed a meeting.
Speakers for the meetings have ranged from senators and preachers to writers and community volunteers.
Bostic related how the club has helped in community projects, such as Samaritan’s Purse (shoeboxes), Christmas gifts and other charities. Steve Robinson of Cleveland Plywood has provided a door prize at each meeting and Bostic hands out treats and prizes regularly.
Shawn Markie serves as the club recorder and puts the monthly minutes (word-for-word) online for those who can’t attend.
When Shoney’s closed, the club began meeting at Ryan’s and now meets at the Golden Corral for lunch (11:30 a.m.) on the last Tuesday of the month.
Everyone is welcome, no matter what age, to the club meetings. There is not a fee for joining the group and participating in the meetings.
The February meeting will be Tuesday, 11:30 a.m., at the Golden Corral. Missionary and Evangelism Coordinator E. Roger Ammons for The Church of God will be the guest speaker.
He will discuss his some 30 trips to Haiti and more recently, his experience in Congo. He serves, also, as pastor of the Southside church.
