The utility is ready to begin work on a feeder line to the new Cleveland Jetport terminal. Borden said CU has all the materials it needs to begin placing poles. These materials were purchased for $33,880. Right of way acquisition has been completed at a cost of $5,487.
The power line is expected to cost $70,655 to make the total cost of the project $110,023. The utility, thus far, has only purchased the material and right of ways, an expenditure of $39,368.
Other major projects discussed by the Electric Division VP include the Peerless Road 13 KV and 69 KV line rebuild, a circuit tie on Freewill Road, and the Appalachian Substation (a control building addition and two feeder breaker replacements).
The $794,560 Peerless Road project is progressing steadily. Field staking has been completed, material acquisition is 59 percent finished with the purchase of $214,552 of the anticipated $364,560 in material. Phase I of the Burlington Sub to the Wolfe Addition is complete at a cost of $313,435, and Phase II to 20th Street is just started (15 percent) with the expense of $34,826 of an anticipated $110,000 cost.
The Freewill Road circuit tie has been slowed with a delay in right of way acquisition. Borden said only six of 16 acquisitions have been finalized. These acquisition are expected to cost $19,155, but only $7,087 has been spent. Some 60 percent of material is on hand at a cost of $29,262, with the overall cost to be $48,771. The cost of the power line is expected to be $133,171 for the $201,098 project.
The Appalachian Sub is expected to be a $222,344 project. The major expense at this point is $41,954 for materials, but this is only 24 percent of the materials’ anticipated cost of $174,344. Borden said the utility has acquired all of the materials, but is waiting for delivery of the remainder. Ten percent of the building and breakers cost ($4,000) has been spent, leaving a balance of $37,408. Liberty Power will be testing the Sub’s installed control and equipment at a cost of $8,000.
Borden provided a list of several other Electric Division projects:
- A work order has been released for permanent service to a new business called Advanced Powder Coatings on Lois Street S.E. The anticipated electrical load is 60 KW, with plans for addition load in the near future.
- A work order has been released and work completed on underground conduits beneath Frontage Road for temporary electric service and preparation for permanent electric service to a new Hampton Inn being constructed across the Road from Cleveland Towne Center.
- Borden said the solar generation project at the Brown Stove Works site has been completed and the installation is very impressive. He said the system is rated at 199.6 KW and should generate approximately 246,000 KWH annually.
- Wildlife guards have been installed at the Lang Street Substation. These guards have been very effective in preventing outages caused by birds, squirrels and other wildlife contact.
- A work order has been issued to install 900 Mhz radios at the intersections of 25th Street at Julian Drive and Spring Creek. The radios will be utilized to connect the Spring Creek intersection to the ITS traffic system for synchronization and timing.
- A work order has been issued for school zone flashing lights along Mouse Creek Road for E.L. Ross and Yates elementary schools. The school zone signs are to be removed from Paul Huff Parkway. The lights were installed April 10, and Borden said the school system has received some favorable comments.
- A complete evaluation of the Opticom pre-emption equipment has been scheduled for the 17 existing intersections containing the devices in the city. The evaluation will determine if the existing equipment, which has been in place for some time, can be made operable or if replacements are required.
The Opticom equipment changes traffic light priorities at these intersections for emergency vehicles.
- Notification procedures have been put in place for Tennessee Highway Patrol dispatchers to notify Cleveland Utilities in the event of lane closures on Interstate 75 that could impact traffic flow on city streets. CU personnel will in turn notify 911 dispatchers and they will notify first responders.
- Engineering is working with property owners along the south side of Raider Drive to secure an easement for a school zone flashing sign. Plans are to install a new flashing school zone sign on the west end of Raider Drive to control the speeds of motorists. The new sign was requested by the Cleveland Police Department and the school crossing guards.
- A five-way traffic signal has been installed at North Ocoee Street and 20th Street N.E., providing a protected turn heading south on North Ocoee and turning east on 20th Street. This signal is now in service.
