She was born in McMinn County and moved with her husband to Asheville, N.C., and resided there a few years before returning and spending the rest of her life home in McMinn County. She was a member of Inanda Baptist Church in Asheville.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Martin, in 1994 and also her parents, Phillip and Nellie Stanton Hughes; sisters, Della Fortner and Effie Roberts; and brothers, Clifford Hughes, Arvil Hughes and Clyde Hughes.
She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Jean Wilson and husband, Jim, of Athens; son, James R. “Butch” Martin and wife, Nancy, of Benton; granddaughters: Jamie King and husband, Ed, of Athens, Trescy Lee and husband, William “Tick,” of Benton; great-grandchildren: T.K. King of Athens, Tiffany Lee and Tyler Lee both of Benton; brother, Dorton Hughes of Ohio and sister-in-law, Jean Hughes of Clearwater, Fla.
A graveside service will be held at noon on today, Dec. 17, 2012, at McMinn Memory Gardens with Dr. Shane Arnold and Dr. Glen Gregg officiating. A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Gideons International
