FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - Down 19-23 in the opening set, the Lee volleyball team battled back to win 25-23 and go on to claim a 3-1 victory over host Emmanuel College on Saturday afternoon. After posting the same 3-1 decision at Southern Wesleyan on Friday, the Lady Flames will face a much tougher challenge at Emory University on Tuesday evening.
The host Lions fought back and won the second set, 23-25, but Lee turned the table right back around by taking the final two sets 25-18, 25-11.
"We came out flat and really could have lost the first two sets," said assistant coach Kevin Hudson after watching his team improve to 12-6 overall and 5-1 in the SSAC.
For the third straight match Lee continued to play with Marija Zelenovic (ankle injury).
"We really miss her on offense, but right now it is our defense that is giving us problems," noted Hudson.
"Marija will not play against Emory, but we hope to have her back for the Brenau match next Friday."
Paula Martins continued to supply the spark for the Lady Flames. She recorded 13 kills and a .500 hitting mark. Martins also paced Lee with seven blocks. Patty Orozco stepped up and delivered 11 kills. Nicole Sumida had another fine effort with 10 kills, four aces and five blocks.
The always present Irene Ojukwu would not be denied and countered with 11 kills and 11 digs. Camil Martinez did her usual thing with 41 key assists and Libero Libby Peigen came up with 27 digs.
