Nearly 100 students at the Wacker Institute at Chattanooga State Community College have received conditional job offers for the new Wacker Polysilicon North America plant under construction in north Bradley County.

The plant is scheduled to open in late 2013.

This week another 13 students received offers from the company for chemical operator positions.

“We are invested in the Wacker Institute program because we are invested in the people who operate our plants,” according to Dr. Konrad Bachhuber, vice president and site manager for Wacker Polysilicon North America. “These students will soon take responsible production roles at one of the world’s most advanced hyperpure polysilicon manufacturing plants.”

Dr. Erika Burk, human resources director for the Wacker complex, said the action shows commitment on both sides — employees and employer.

“Many of these students are a year away from obtaining their degrees,” Burk stressed. “We want to express our commitment to them with these offers. They know a career is waiting for them once they graduate.”

Wacker Polysilicon plans to extend at least 50 more conditional job offers to students at the Wacker Institute for chemical operator positions. The next interviews will take place later this year.

The students who received the job offers from Wacker Polysilicon are currently enrolled in the chemical engineering technology associate’s degree program. Their careers with Wacker Polysilicon North America will begin in August 2013.

The job offers are conditional upon a background check, drug screening, preemployment physical and 3.0 GPA. Students must obtain their degrees.

Those interested in learning more about the Wacker Institute are invited to attend a public information session and tour at Chattanooga State, Burk explained. She said the information sessions will be held twice weekly beginning this week.

Effective Wednesday, the information sessions are being held at the Wacker Institute which is located on the Chattanooga State campus. The sessions will be held each Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m., and Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m., in the Resource Room. These sessions will be held every week until Aug. 16. Due to limited seating, attendees are asked to RSVP to Deanna Swiney at 423-697-2601.

The sessions will include an overview of Wacker and Wacker Institute, a tour of the pilot plant and Wacker Institute facility, and an overview from Chattanooga State student services and engineering technology representatives.

Once the new plant opens near Charleston, it will employ some 650 full-time workers.
