Wayne L. Woody, died on Thursday, April 10, 2014, at Walter Reed Hospital, Bethesda, Md. with family by his side.
He is survived by his sister, Geraldine Woody of Cleveland; and seven nieces and nephews.
He was born on Nov. 14, 1922, in Benton, to Robert and Mamie Woody.
In August 1940, he began his military career and in 1943 he entered World War II as part of the 4th Infantry Division. His story is one of bravery, character and color. During the landing on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944 he was shot in the leg, captured by the Germans as a POW and then rescued by the American Army. He re-enlisted to serve in the Korean War and remained in the military until retirement. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was a proud member of American Legion Post 81 in Cleveland.
