HIAWASSEE, Ga. — The Polk County Wildcat offense sputtered to less than 30 points as they dropped their opening round contest in the annual Battle of the States, Thursday.

Netting just single digits in three of the four periods, coach Rusty Brewer’s Wildcats managed just a dozen second half points in a 39-29 defeat to Union County, Ga.

The Boys from Benton will be back in action this afternoon at 2:30 against either Murphy, N.C., or the host Towns County, Ga., squad. No information about the Polk girls’ game was available at press time.

After falling behind 13-7 in the opening quarter Thursday, the Wildcats were able to trim the deficit to just four points at the intermission.

Polk pulled within three points at the end of the third frame, but a 13-6 run by the Union County squad in the final eight minutes pushed the difference to double digits by the final horn.

Derrick Weber posted a double-double to pace the Polk effort with a dozen points and 13 rebounds.

Cody Groomes added 10 points and four caroms for the Wildcats, while Devin Weber pulled down four boards.

Chandler Hutcheson netted just two points, but cleared eight caroms and dished out seven assists for coach Brewer’s crew.

Zach Odom and Rhett McCombs led Union County with 20 and 10 points respectively.
