Hershel T. Hicks, who was born on May 15, 1923, is celebrating his 90th birthday today. Mr. Hicks is a War War II veteran. He and his wife, Mildred, 87, who celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on May 8, have always lived in Bradley County. The Hickses have three children. In this early photo, the baby, Brian, is their first grandchild.

FCE members, who completed 23 handmade, cloth story books recently for the Books for Newborns project, presented one to new parent Jessica Streiff and her son, Seth, at SkyRidge Medical Center. With the new mother and son, standing from left, are Betty Morrow, Jeri Ervin, Barbara Peterson, Sherry Castell, Phylllis Narus, VIrginia Orr, Marsha St. John and Patricia Pierce. To futher promote the importance of reading to young children. a second book is presented to the child at its first birthday. Books for Newborns, a community service project of Bradley County Family and Community Education Clubs, is part of a nationwide effort to improve literacy for children. FCE clubs complete a number of community service projects each year including Books for Newborns.

Velma I. Jenkins Randolph will celebrate her 98th birthday on May 13. She was the oldest daughter of 10 children of H.P. and Callie Williams Jenkins, lifetime residents of Bradley County. She has one brother living, Lawrence Jenkins, the youngest son. In 1941, she married Joe K. Randolph, who died in 1997. She is the mother of three children: Angee Varnell Rapier and her husband, Charlie; Rita Randolph Pirkle and her husband, Edd; and Earl Randolph and his wife, Lisa Bain; four grandchildren: Scott Varnell, Vic Pirkle, Joe Pirkle and Megan Justice; and one great-grandchild, Maxwell Pirkle. The nonogenarian still resides in her own home under the care of her children.
