The Magnolia Garden Club held its April meeting at the home of Sue Taylor. Master Gardener Johnnie Arnett presented a program on wildflowers. Velma I. Jenkins Randolph will celebrate her 98th birthday on May 13. She was the oldest daughter of 10 children of H.P. and Callie Williams Jenkins, lifetime residents of Bradley County. She has one brother living, Lawrence Jenkins, the youngest son. In 1941, she married Joe K. Randolph, who died in 1997. She is the mother of three children: Angee Varnell Rapier and her husband, Charlie; Rita Randolph Pirkle and her husband, Edd; and Earl Randolph and his wife, Lisa Bain; four grandchildren: Scott Varnell, Vic Pirkle, Joe Pirkle and Megan Justice; and one great-grandchild, Maxwell Pirkle. The nonogenarian still resides in her own home under the care of her children.

Laurel McFadden, an active member of First Baptist Church and the of the DAV Chapter 25, will be 90 years old May 12. The nonogenarian has lived in Cleveland since the 1970s, working as meat cutter for a number of independent grocery stores, the latest being Cook’s Food Store. Mr. McFadden has already begun planting his annual garden and enjoys working around the house, taking care of his chickens, cat and dog. Best of all, he still drives when needed, recently renewing his driver’s license, which is valid until 2018.  Family and friends wil celebrate his birthday with a dinner on Saturday afternoon and he wil be recognized at his regular DAV meeting on Tuesday.
