Arvene Griffey


Arvene Griffey, 89, a resident of Cleveland, passed away Wednesday, May 22, 2019, in a local hospital.

She was the daughter of the late Martha Ward Elliott and James Jonas Elliott. She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton Griffey; her granddaughter, Amy Griffey Pigg; her sisters: Corine Johnson and Judy Davis; and her brothers: Laffe Elliott and Johnny Elliott.

She was retired from the Bradley County School System, serving many years as the cafeteria manager for Trewhitt Elementary School. She enjoyed cooking, traveling to the beach and she was an avid reader. Most of all, she loved being a grandmother and spending time with her family.

She was a longtime member of the North Cleveland Church of God and the Unity Sunday School Class.

Survivors include her daughter, Lorie Gassel and her husband, Brian, of Atlanta; her sons: James Griffey and his wife, S. Dianne Griffey, and Terry Griffey and his wife, Sonia Griffey, all of Cleveland; her grandchildren: Andrea Shope and her husband, Jamie, Sarah Medlin and her husband, Clark, Debbie Moore and her husband, Josh, Brent Griffey and his wife, Andra, Melissa Rickmeyer and her husband, Paul, Amanda Griffey, Christopher Griffey and his wife, April, Lauren Gassel and Morgan Gassel; her 28 great-grandchildren; her one great-great-grandchild; her sisters: Joyce Clevenger of Nashville,  and Florine Stiltner of Grundy, Va.; her brother, James Jonas Jr. and his wife, Shirley, of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.

The Remembrance of Life service will be conducted on Saturday, May 25, 2019, at 2 p.m. at the Jim Rush Funeral and Cremation Services, North Ocoee Chapel, with family and friends officiating.

Entombment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens, with Brent Griffey, Chris Griffey, Tucker Shope, Jonathan Pigg, Matthew Pigg, Joseph Moore, Clark Medlin and Brian Gassel serving as casket bearers.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Mitochondrial Disease Foundation (UMDF).

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. this evening at the funeral home.
