The local Better Business Bureau office is moving from downtown Cleveland to a location staff hope will be more visible to the public.
The office opened last year in office space on the second floor of the Regions Bank building at the intersection of the Inman and North Ocoee streets. Now, it is moving to a location along Keith Street.
"We have had a lot of foot traffic here at the downtown office," said Lisa Geren, executive director of the BBB's Cleveland branch. "We were very pleased with the number of folks who actually sought us out. However, this opportunity presented itself, and we are excited for it."
The BBB, founded in 1912, is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit organization which offers a variety of services to promote good business practices, including addressing consumer complaints and accrediting businesses good at preempting and addressing concerns.
The Cleveland office is one of more than 100 offices throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico which serve as local points of contact for consumers.
"Regions Bank gave us a great opportunity to open this office here; they have been great to us," Geren said. "With how this area has grown, Cleveland was overdue to have its own office."
Over the past several months, the local BBB office has helped consumers do everything from research businesses and nonprofit organizations to file complaints. While consumers can do some of these things online, Geren said many consumers who have visited have not had internet access at home.
Staff have also built relationships within the local business community. It has also joined the biannual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day events, offering free document shredding services.
"The local office is important for many reasons, including availability to the businesses and community members," Geren said. "We hope to continue to grow the connections we have been building and promote trust within the local business community."
"We are here to stay," she added. "We are passionate about the Cleveland community."
The new office will be located at 3535 Keith St. N.W., in the green-roofed building housing the Nationwide Insurance Allyson Hannah Agency. The BBB will have its own entrance and signs indicating where to go.
Geren said she is excited to have a location that will be more visible from the street and more accessible to those who have trouble navigating stairs.
The move is in progress now. Geren said the new office is expected to be open by July 1. However, she urges those wishing to visit the current office to call first to make sure someone is there.
