For the second time in three years, the Cleveland High School varsity cheerleading squad was chosen by the Universal Cheerleaders Association and Vanderbilt University to cheer for the basketball Commodores.
When it goes on Christmas break in early December, Vanderbilt reaches out to teams that have shown talent at camp and throughout their season to fill in for their collegiate squad. The CHS team got this chance.
The girls were able to cheer on the raised court, participate in promotional deals with the school, perform during timeouts, quarter breaks and halftime as if they were college cheerleaders.
"I would attribute their recognition to the fact that all six of our seniors made the All-American team at camp," said Coach Melissa Barnett. "It was such a neat experience for them, and obviously a proud moment as a coach."
Barnett said these accomplishments are just "the tip of the iceberg" for the accomplished group of young ladies.
"Three seniors have 4.0s, as do several other girls," Barnett added. "They are involved in clubs, do community service, all while supporting every football and wrestling event, athletes, coaches and other people involved in the sporting events!"
