Cleveland City Schools has announced backup dates for its graduation ceremony should the school closure continue due to the novel coronavirus, COVID-19.
On the day Cleveland City Schools students might have returned to the classroom, they received a letter from the administration regarding makeup dates for the Class of 2020 commencement. The ceremony is currently scheduled for May 15 at 6 p.m., but the school district has arranged two backup dates on June 12 and July 10, should they need to cancel.
“This is certainly not what we expected for your senior year," the Cleveland City Schools letter to students' families reads. "I know these times have been frustrating and you are heartbroken over the recent events that have impacted your time at Cleveland High School. Please know that we stand by you during these trying times and are committed to ending your senior year in a way that honors your work and the impact you have had on our school."
The earliest date for a return to school is now April 27, which would give students four weeks of classes before school lets out for the summer.
The state of Tennessee has issued a waiver for testing, attendance and accountability-related assessments for all schools due to the Nashville tornadoes and the coronavirus. Schools will not have to make up missed days this year, nor will they be required or asked to administer standardized testing for students. Any results from such assessments cannot negatively affect students, teachers or school accountability scores.
School has now been out since March 6, the beginning of spring break. Since students’ return from break on March 16, instruction has continued online.
Schools have been transformed into food-service locations, where families can drive up and receive meals, and bus routes are now a meals-on-wheels operation that deliver daily meals to students and instructional packets if they need them.
Cleveland City Schools online instruction takes place at CCSathomelearning.com.
PBS stations are also partnering with the Tennessee Department of Education for another means of instruction on its local stations.
