Commissioner Purkey named honorary member

Tennessee Commissioner of Safety and Homeland Security David Purkey was named an honorary lifetime members of the Cleveland 100 during ceremonies Thursday night.

Mayor Tom Rowland, one of the founders of the organization, called Purkey “a faithful supporter of Cleveland 100.”

“For several years, he has taken his time to honor each of you who are here tonight,” Rowland said. “I know of no one who has a better handle on what each of you go through, day in and day out.”

Purkey called it “a privilege” to be with the law enforcement and first responders gathered for the event.

He spoke of spending a lot of time in Bradley County and mentioned all of the people with whom he works, “who love public safety and do what they can for public safety.”

“I love coming here because of organizations like Cleveland 100 and the way that you show how you feel about those who have given their lives in the line of duty, and how their families need to be taken care of and how you can do something special for them,” Purkey said.

“I know of no other program like this in the state,” he said. “It’s unmatched.”

Purkey said in the seven years he has served in office, he has seen nothing to match the services Cleveland 100 provides.

“I am all about public safety and I like to hang around those who are all about public safety and honoring those who stand in the gap on any given day or night,” he said.

Purkey said he was honored to have been named a member of Cleveland 100.

“Thank you so much for what you do,” he said.

Rowland presented Purkey with a commemorative clock representing his Cleveland 100 honor.
