Cougars pull off stunner over Wildcats

COPPER BASIN — Gridiron action returned to Polk County Friday night with the Wildcats from Polk County traveling to Copper Basin to face a well-oiled Cougars machine.

The Cougars put an end to the 16-year winless streak against Polk, pulling off a stunning 15-7 win. Copper Basin's last victory over the 'Cats came in 2002 with a similar 15-6 score in Benton.

Rain was pouring up until a few minutes before kick-off, leading to slick conditions.

Copper Basin opened with a rolling kickoff to Polk’s front line, causing a fumble. The Cougars recovered the ball around mid field. But, on the first play from scrimmage, Basin fumbled and gave the the ball back to Polk.

After several punts from both sides, Polk got a break with a short punt leaving them just inside midfield. Quarterback Kole Green completed passes to both Aiden French and Alex Williams and was soon poised for a score at the 1-yard line. The Cougars predicted the run up the middle and stopped the Big Red Train in its tracks. The Polk drive ended with a second fumble.

Basin quarterback Bryson Grabowski enjoyed good protection from the offensive line while moving the ball against Polk. Running back Chance Bailey put up the first six points for the Cougars in the second quarter and Polk was down 7-0 at halftime.

The Wildcats returned in the second half and made some big stops on defense, but still struggled to get points on the board. Basin was within striking distance with 4:37 left in the third when Polk’s Alex Williams came down with an interception.

Polk's Green delivered a long pass to the end zone. Basin tipped the ball, but the Wildcats' Alex Williams made an incredible catch at the back of the end zone to put the 'Cats on the board.

The rest of the game was a defensive battle between the two county rivals with the only other score coming at 7:41 in the fourth by Basin’s Bailey. A successful 2-point conversion made the final score Basin 15, Polk 7.
