Cry Out America event is Tuesday

Cry Out America, an annual Christian prayer event, is scheduled for Tuesday, noon to 1 p.m., at the Bradley County Courthouse Square.

This local event is one of thousands of such events slated to take place across the United States that day. Organizers say prayer is needed more than ever before, and they hope Americans will take the time to pray.

“We are hurting ourselves more and more by not turning to God to pray,” said Iris Ray, co-coordinator of the local event. “Prayer can help solve a lot of problems in this country, because He hears our prayers.”

Cry Out America, an initiative of the National Day of Prayer Task Force, has been observed on Sept. 11 each year since 2007. The annual event date was chosen in remembrance of the terrorist attacks which occurred on American soil in 2001.

While the event is not intended to be a 9/11 memorial, Ray said the events  “served as a wake-up call” that the country was in need of prayer.

Ray said the goal of the Cry Out America events is to rally Christians together and inspire them to get in the habit of praying for the nation regularly.

Organizers of Cleveland’s event choose a theme each year, and this year’s focus will be “The Mountain of Business and the Marketplace.” In past years, organizers have focused prayer efforts on other “cultural mountains” or aspects of daily life, such as the media, the arts and education.

“When the church gives up their influence in these areas, the world takes over,” said Ray. “Prayer makes a difference in how those ‘mountains’ operate.”

The event will feature speeches and prayers led by people from several local churches and ministries. There will also be a time of worship with a mass choir consisting of singers from different churches.

Ray said everyone — regardless of church affiliation — is invited to gather and pray for the wellbeing of the country and its people.
