Donations continue for WHR Basket Fund

Some 750 received a box full of food staples on Saturday at the William Hall Rodgers Christmas Basket distribution.

These boxes included items such as flour, sugar and bread, as well as a ham and a baking hen.

For more than 90 years, the Basket Fund has been an instrument in the community to ensure those in need have food for the holidays. The effort now is spearheaded by volunteers who want to help their less fortunate neighbors. All the funds given to the basket effort go directly into purchasing the food. There are no paid workers or associates.

The cost to fill the boxes with food was approximately $24,000. All the money needed to pay the cost has not yet been collected. Residents can join the effort to feed the needy by donating to the Basket Fund today.

Of the $24,000 needed, some $15,150 has been collected. This week some $3,225 has come in for the fund.

Donating this week were Phil and Sally Russell, $50; Andrew and Kellye Bender, in memory of Scott Hicks, $500; Ocoee Lodge No. 97 I.O.I.F, $100; First United Methodist Church St. Andrews Sunday School Class, $50; Barry and Nancy Boettner, $100; Terry and Sandy Henry, $50; Karen and Glen Leach, $25; Mary Caldwell, $50; Floy and Rita Davidson, $100; James and Diane Williams, $100; Walter F. Peterson, $2,000; and Mack and Margret Decker, $100.
